Library Basics

The Eileen J. Garrett Research Library has moved to its new facility at 308 Front Street in the picturesque Long Island oceanside town of Greenport. (Click here for directions to the library.)

One of the world’s largest libraries devoted to parapsychology, the Eileen J. Garrett Research Library, named for one of the PF’s founders, contains more than 12,000 volumes — including rare books on early psychical research — and more than 100 periodicals. The collection emphasizes the literature of contemporary parapsychology and those publications that approach the subject from objective and analytical points of view. The library also maintains strong sections on history of psychical research and parapsychology — including early Spiritualism, mysticism and relevant philosophical works — as well as on mediumship, apparitions, hauntings, poltergeists, near-death and out-of-body experiences, experimental research on extrasensory perception, psychokinesis and precognition. A number of relevant encyclopedias, doctoral dissertations on parapsychological topics, introductory textbooks, and biographies of researchers, psychics and mediums are also on hand.

In addition to complete runs of the main academic journals in parapsychology — such as the International Journal of Parapsychology, the European Journal of Parapsychology, and the Journal of Parapsychology — the library also has the journals and proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research in London and the American Society for Psychical Research in the United States, the proceedings of the annual Parapsychological Association conventions, a good collection of skeptical magazines, a number of non-English language academic journals, popular magazines on the topic from the U.S. and the U.K., and hard-to-find discontinued periodicals.

For patrons, the Garrett Research Library also maintains a searchable computer catalog, a vertical file of manuscripts and pamphlets, helpful topic bibliographies and a map to the collection. And, in addition to the main reading room, the library houses a Periodicals Reading Room and a Film and Audio Archive Viewing/Listening Room.

The Library is open by appointment only and operates on a read-in basis; The collection does not circulate.
